“Orientis Partibus” is a French carol from the 13th century which was sung in Christmastide pageants praising the donkey who carried the Holy Family to Egypt. Over time the carol was brought to England and became “The Friendly Beasts” The lyrics were rewritten by Robert Davis and shifted to the role of the animals in the nativity.
